Background

Traditionally, grave markers crafted by local blacksmiths have played a vital role in honoring the deceased, offering a sustainable, meaningful, and deeply personal form of remembrance. These markers not only reflected individual identities and beliefs but also strengthened regional cultural heritage through skilled craftsmanship and evolving artistic expression.

Beyond their symbolic value, such traditions supported local economies and environmentally sound production practices. However, modern industrialization and digital memorials have increasingly displaced these customs, threatening the survival of regional craft and identity.

In light of these shifts, we invite proposals that explore new rituals and reinterpret traditional practices—bridging contemporary needs with the enduring values of local craftsmanship.

We received an impressive total of 45 submitted concepts exploring how a grave marker might address loss and mourning in the future. In our evaluation, particular emphasis was placed on the qualities of skilled metal craftsmanship as well as on the conceptual ability to respond to societal needs.

Many submissions were worthy of recognition. After careful consideration, we selected seven concepts to advance to the next stage, where we will work toward realizing the grave marker as a physical object.

Selected Artists are:

The concept reimagines the grave marker as a personalized, portable memory object—small vessels that hold ashes or mementos—allowing mourning to take place wherever the bereaved find themselves while still enabling a shared, communal resting place. By combining affordability, individuality, and collective remembrance, it proposes a contemporary alternative to the traditional headstone, drawing on traditions such as the columbarium and the Scandinavian minnelund. Process

Before presenting any results publicly, the following development steps will be carried out with each of the seven selected concepts:

Concept Development with the Artist
Joint refinement of the artistic idea, including material, form, feasibility, and alignment with the project’s objectives.

Budget Calculation
Detailed cost assessment covering materials, fabrication, labor, logistics, and potential contingencies.

Realization
Production of the physical work in close collaboration with the artist, including prototyping, fabrication, and final execution.

Publication
Preparation of documentation and communication materials, including text, photography, and contextual information for public dissemination.

Exposure of the Result
Presentation of the completed work in the designated exhibition or public context, accompanied by appropriate framing and communication.

Conference

From October 9th to 12th, 2025, Campus Steneby hosted a conference dedicated to discussing sustainable, innovative, and meaningful grave markers crafted by local blacksmiths. The conference featured workshops, craft skill demonstrations, debates, and talks. This event was a unique opportunity to advance the craft of blacksmithing and foster its momentum.
